Syed M. Ahsan

Professor

Professor Ahsan received his early education leading to BA (Honours: 1969 batch) at Dhaka University in Bangladesh. He went on to complete an MA in Economics (1971) at the University of Essex in England and a PhD (1974) at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. His doctoral thesis was judged the best in the field of Economics in the 1974-5 country-wide competition under the auspices of the Canada Council. He taught at the University of Western Ontario (1974-77) and at Concordia University (1977-2014), where he was promoted to the rank of Full Professor in 1988. Over his academic career, Professor Ahsan has served as a Visiting Professor at many prestigious universities in many countries including Bangladesh (BIDS & U of Chittagong), Belgium (Université Catholique de Louvain), China (University of International Economics and Business, Beijing), Czech Republic (Central European University), Denmark (Copenhagen Business School), Finland (WIDER & ETLA), Germany (U of Bonn, IZA & U of Munich), India (So Asian University, 2014-18), Italy (U of Bergamo & U Cattolica de Sacre-Cour, Milano), Japan (Seikei U & U of Tokyo), Netherlands (U of Tilburg), Norway (U of Bergen & Norwegian Business School) and Sweden (U of Goteborg). He has also done advising/consulting work for the Asian Development Bank, DFID-UKAid, UNDP and the World Bank. During 2005-7 he was the World Bank Resident Economic Advisor at the Bangladesh Bank, the central bank of Bangladesh.

Teaching Areas

    Professor Ahsan generally teaches (i) Poverty & Inequality: Theory & Policy, (ii) Public Economics: Theory & Taxation Policy, and (iii) ‘International Economics: Theory & Policy’.

Research Areas

    His principal areas of research interests include (a) “Access, Exclusion & Inequity in Healthcare in South Asia”, (b) “Human Development & Public Policy”, (c) Long-Term Economic Development of South Asia, (d) Inclusive Microinsurance: The Delivery and Regulatory Architecture”, (e) Theory of Tax Policy under Uncertainty, and (f) Electoral Reforms in a Federation.
