MPhil & PhD Program

MPhil in Health Economics

The MPhil in Health Economics is a research-focused postgraduate programme for students who already hold a Master’s degree in Health Economics, Economics, Business Studies, or any related discipline. Eligible candidates must have a good second class at the Master’s level and at least a second division/class in all earlier examinations (SSC, HSC, and graduation). The M.Phil. programme consists of four semesters of coursework and research, with students completing foundational and advanced courses such as Economics of Health Care, Management of Health Services, Applied Econometrics, and Research Methodology. After completing coursework, students undertake supervised research leading to an M.Phil. thesis. The programme strengthens students’ theoretical understanding, econometric skills, and research capacity, preparing them for advanced academic research, policy analysis, teaching, and progression to the Ph.D. level.

The PhD in Health Economics is an advanced research degree intended for scholars seeking to contribute original research to the field of health economics and health-sector policy. Applicants without an M.Phil. may also be considered for direct admission if they possess strong research and/or teaching experience in relevant fields. The final eligibility decision may be relaxed by the Academic Board upon the recommendation of the Institute’s Academic Committee. The PhD programme involves rigorous coursework where required, extensive independent research, and the completion of a doctoral dissertation. It prepares candidates for advanced academic careers, high-level policy analysis, leadership roles in research institutions, and expert positions in government agencies, international organizations, and health-sector bodies.
